Short Ten Pheasants

2 Attachment(s)
We said to ourselves: Why not spend a warm afternoon trudging through thick cover carrying a heavy duck gun while chasing pheasants? Let’s man up. Sure enough, the short tens made quick work of the birds we raised. Counterintuitively, after switching to lighter guns (28 for me), we found ourselves burning even more calories as we chased down birds. What a great day?

I thank my maternal grandfather God rest his soul for my deep intrest in 10 gauge 2 7/8” doubles ! It all started around 1968 or 1969 when I first became aware of the circa 1881 W&C Scott 10 gauge hammerless he had . And as expected that guns in my possession along with a rather LARGE covey of other 10 doubles . So to me shooting pheasants with a 10 gauge is rather cool

FWIW , here in the Old Dominion we have a late dove season between Xmas and New Years that a group of us try to catch every year . Anyway a good many of the shots that time of year would be right on time for a tight choked long barreled Parker or whatever brand 10 gauge with 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 ounces of shot .

Use one of the Blue Dot loads you worked up Victor? I use the 35 grain one all the time now. Thanks for that and this post!

Bob:

I used my Winchester Super Field (WSF) load. Just swapped 1.25 ounces of copper-plated #6 lead for the 1.25 ounces of larger bismuth and added two 16 gauge overshot cards under the fiber wad. Worked great.

Craig, I didn't realize we have a late dove season in Virginia. I'm in Woodbridge. I'll have to try it out. I have a #2 from 12 ga with full chokes that may work well.
