First of all, I am hoping that this is a place where I can start this post? It seemed ok?
Ok, so so I purchased this Purdey trunk case. It came configured as a two stocks, three barrel case. I have it all taken apart and am currently securing the leather straps and corners where needed. Also adding extra canvas to support the hinge point and any corners that need a little extra support. My question is how should I build up this case? I'm planning on selling it so I would like to know what is the best way to reconfigure the case or how would you like to see the case reconfigured? I can make this case really anyway I want to, but I just need some inspiration from some other people. I have the darker red Baize on order from England, so the insides will be the darker maroon or red color (original color). New black leather label will also be installed. After that it is what ever we all decide on. Any and all advise is much welcomed. Thanks Matt |
Mr. Hanson:
This is what's known as a "motor case." Not a trunk case. I assume that it had a Purdey label inside when you acquired it? If not, there is no way to ascertain that it was built for a Purdey gun. Generally from your information, these were made up for a pair or trio of guns. Few shooters have those on hand these days. If it were to be reconfigured, it might well be for a single or a pair. This all depends on the dimensions of the case. But the final choice is your's. |
Hey Ken,
It is in fact a Purdey case because it is stamped on the inside of the lip of the case and when I pulled off the old Baize, in pencil it is written on the wood on the bottom. It is hard to see in the pictures. You can make out the (PUR) before the shadows cover up the rest of the name. Has the name clearly written as well as the original configuration of the case itself It held two 30"barrels and one 28" barrel. it also has other numbers on the case suggesting the the original serial number of the two gun set?? Your guess is as good as mine. 22899 and 164484?? |
If you are interested in having it restored, Kevin McCormick, a member of the PGCA, does an outstanding job restoring old cases like this one.

Matt I'd do it as a single stock two barrel set. I just happen to know someone with a Purdey 16ga two barrel set:whistle:

22,899 is a legitimate Purdey serial number. 164,484 is not. You didn't really rip out the bottom half of this wonderful case, did you?
