Removing forearm lug
 
Has anyone removed a forearm lug? If so, can you give me some help. Tried loosening the solder with a solder gun but no luck. Thanks for any help.

Personally I wouldn't even attempt it....

The solder needs to be melted with a torch and by doing so you will also loosen the rib(s?)

I would send it to a double gun smith well experienced in doing it.

I had one that was loosening on its own . So I sent it to Giacomo and they fixed it as well as rust blueing the barrels .

I looked at a DHE for sale on a local auction. It was a darn nice gun except for the lug repair. Apparently the lug loosened and someone attempted to silver solder it back in place. I so doing they heated the barrel/rib solder which compromised the barrels. There was no ring to them at all. Just a dull thud.

The lower ribs on both sides of it, and at the same time the top rib needs to be tied with wire to keep them in place. A torch is used to soften the solder on the lug until it can be pulled free with a pair of pliers. It takes a few minites to heat it up to the point where it will pull free.

I would still recommend an inexperienced person not attempt it.

I second the professional only thought on this. The whole thing can go south fast if you're not careful. Getting the lug back in the exact spot is a challenge and you will almost certainly have some refitting to do to get it to latch properly. Another of those jobs where knowing how it's done, and knowing how to do it are two very different things.

I wholly agree.
I will add that the relocating of the lug usually is not a problem. The two lower rib sections are so tightly fit that the lug has no where else to go but right in where it was. But, if it is not fully seated, that can cause issues for sure.

I cannot imagine why any well attached forend lug would need to be removed.
