Setting shield brads

Is it ok to set shield brads that are too proud?

Brian Dudley 05-04-2018 08:17 PM

Your shield is proud too.

It is best to re-inlet, epoxy it in, install the brads and dress it off before refinishing.

Haven’t done that before, but I have a set of tiny carving chisels I can try.

Got it. Simple enough. Thanks Brian.

Let’s see a pic of how it turned out Bill.

Most times it is corrosion from the backside of the shield that pushes it up off the wood. Taking it iff and cleaning that crud out is usually enough to get it reset nicely.

A lot of blue/green crud, but needed a little more help.

Looks good.

Sure they did not have epoxy in the day, but i situations like this, it is best to improve upon their methods where we can.

Looks really good Bill. Nice work!
