Half Pistol Grip DH
Hello. I am a new member and have just received my 1st research letter back. Very Cool!
I have a couple questions regarding the letter. It states my gun was made in 1895 and had a half pistol grip stock. This is a DH 16 gauge on a 0 frame. What exactly does this look like? I have other Parkers and some have a capped pistol grip and some have a round knob similar to a Browning round knob Superposed. I do not know what Half Pistol grip means. Please help. Also on another thread it mentions a "spur" Wondered what that is too.?? thanks in advance. |
Generally speaking, A half grip is the round knob. Or a pistol grip without a cap.
In the Parker world, a spur would usually refer to the top side of buttplates that cut into the stock on guns made prior to the mid-20s. |
Welcome! A DH 16 on a 0 frame is quite a desirable gun. What Brian says is correct

Thank you very much.

Hey, Rick, what part of Ohio is Okeana in. I grew up, work, and own a farm in Belmont County, Oh--just across the river from Wheeling Wv

I sent the gun to Turnbull for a loose fore end repair. They called asking about the stock. Evidently a book they looked it up in said it should have a capped grip. Mine is a round knob. I sent for the letter and it clearly states 1/2 pistol grip. I guess they are looking in an incorrect book?

Okeana is a small farming community in Southwestern Ohio. Near to Oxford and Hamilton, Ohio. We live on a small farm here.

A capped pistol grip is exactly what the name describes. A "pistol grip" was often used in the stock book to describe what we know as a half pistol grip or a round knob but is often confused to be a capped pistol grip. We need to be very careful in our interpretations of what is actually recorded vs what the gun demonstrates.
And "ball grips" are found almost exclusively on lifters though there are a very few known to be original on later guns. . |
Ok thx Dean. My gun has a round knob and the research letter states half pistol grip so I assume this to be correct. What prompted me to get the letter was the conversation I had with Turnbull stating this gun should have a capped grip. Thank you for the clarification. I guess there are books out there with misinformation or folks are not interpreting info correctly.

I think you may be right in that sometimes misinterpretation is the cause of the confusion.
