New (to me anyway) DH

Well i came to terms with a seller today on a nice DH 12 gauge he sent me. 30 inch barrels, 2 frame, 8lber, 2.5 DAH, 14 1/8 LOP, full and full gun matching the letter perfectly.

Being me it was of course a 1900 gun made in 1898 with some gorgeous original damascus pattern. New for me though it has pheasants on the floor plate instead of the 3 dog guns i had been getting. It was ordered by E K Tyron and company of Philly who i understand to have been a fairly well known entity in that city. H.E. Donson of Carlisle Pa apparently bought it. He seems to have been a fairly involved amature trap shooter up through 1916 i bwlieve, winning the south Pennsylvania trap championship several years. I found records of his shootin through most of the early 1900s and teens on la84 and forest and stream. In 1912 he sent it back to repair action, repair stock, and rebrown barrels, in 1915 it went bavk again to restock with same configuration and reengrave the shield. The shield looks like it has FKB engraved on it but not certain. If it is JKB and its a monogram i may have an idea who it is but not certain.
Shortly after the 1915 work, Donson seems to disappear from the trap circuit.

One interesting note is that the letter specified 2 3/4 shells which i found surprising at this date.

The gun is in really really nice condition and i would bet it hasn't been shot a lot since the 1915 work. Checkering is sharp, buttplate is colored, damascus pattern is nice, butt stock is amazing, forend a little darker but it was never redone. The case colors have gone grey, but what can you say its been 117 years since they were put on. It seems to be a very nice gun, for which i will thank the member on here who sold it to me.

I know pictures.... i will do my best to get some in the morning and post them.

Congrats on the new gun.
IMO, the D Grade is the best bang for the buck. I see it as the gateway gun to the world of high grade Parkers.

Thanks Dean i almost bought a CH that wasnt quite ad nice but geez those are pricey.

Mills Morrison 06-14-2017 01:21 PM

Very nice! Congratulations! I am holding out for a CH with Bernard barrels or a GH from the Remington era. Need to raise the cash first.

Bill Murphy 06-14-2017 01:30 PM

Mr. Donson shot American Trapshooting Association competition birds at least as late as 1920, maybe later.

Bill Holcombe 06-14-2017 01:38 PM

I think 1920 is the last record i found. I dont know if he tapered off in his shooting or trap shooting declined in general after the mid teens because there isnt nearly as much mention of him after about 1915 as there was previously.

He was a prettt hood shot, breaking 90+ percent of clay pigeons and hitting 17 or 18 out of 20 live birds usually.
