Loading for Short Chambered Damascus Barrels

I realize I'm probably asking about something old hat to most here, and probably discussed many times before, but I'm getting back into reloading and would like some help in finding authoritative information on loading shotshells for Damascus barreled guns. Are there any good books out there? Authoritative web sites? I'm also looking for good step-by-step information for cutting down shells for short chambered guns. I'm interested in loading for 12 gauge, but especially 16 and 10 gauge (2 7/8"). I have the standard loading books from about 15 years back. I have kept up with discussions and articles about shooting Damascus guns, and have been shooting RST and Polywad shells for years. I have some load suggestions from good folks from this forum also, but I'm looking for a basic book that focuses on loading for Damascus, including Bismuth, Nice Shot, etc. as well as lead.

Is there there such a "creature" out there?

Thanks!

A lot of the members here reload fro such guns and everybody has his own sweetheart loads - a lot of us use the same loads too. You can get a lot of good and safe advice from the guys here. You can also visit the 16 Gauge Society's website for load data.

Thanks, Dean. I have already gotten some load recommendations from the good folks here. By your (kind and quick!) response, can I assume you know of no comprehensive book/manual? My guess is that fear of litigation has stymied attempts at publishing.

I will check the 16 Gauge Society -- thanks for that suggestion.

www.16ga.com should get you there.

no such book that i know off

there are instructions for making hull trimmers in the short ten thread

and hodgon powder has low pressure loads mixed in their recipes on their site
including some for bismuth - nice shot loads like lead but adds about 1500 psi - so adjust for that

The only shells I cut down are the 10ga 3 1/2 to 2 7/8. A band saw or a single edge razor blade in a wood dowel set at about a 20 degree angle also works. I've never worried about 2 1/2" 12ga - that 1/4' shorter only raises pressure about 500psi and if you're reloading low pressure shells it won't make much difference. There isn't much published for 10ga so I just use a mild [ 8500psi or less ] 12ga load. With the larger chamber it will be less in the 10. Good luck.

Paul, Thanks for this post. I have my eye on another 10 ga. and if I manage to get it, I'll have one more "mouth" to feed. I have lots of 3 1/2 hulls to use!
