If a gun is not in the serial number book is it safe to assume no letter is available ?

It is not. Often guns that have no spot in book do letter.

Go to the Home Page and click on Research Letters on the left and follow the instructions to see if data is available on your serial number.

The Serialization Book is based primarily on the stock books with a few exceptions on grades D and higher found in the order books. The home page research letter link looks at information in both the order books and stock books. Your best chance to get the most info is between the years of 1877 and 1919 where we have both order books and stock books in that time period.
