Interesting FYI
Just saw this over on that other Forum and thought I'd pass it on as a point of interest.

There's "another" forum?? Really??
|
I removed a Hawkins from a 30" 1 frame DHE16, and it weighed 6.2 ounces. The reason I removed it is because the gun originally came with a skeleton butt plate, and I recently found the correct one here.
The SSBP weighs 2.2 ounces, The net difference of removing 4 ounces moves the balance point forward by about 2.5" There were two 3/4" holes in the butt, each about 4" deep. I think it will be necessary to add a little bit of weight when making the plugs for those holes. Even so, I think it will reduce the guns weight by about 2 ounces. Indecently, the new length of pull will be a much more suitable 14 5/16" - 14 3/8" for me |
I have a selection of pads - trying to find a classic look and light weight to put on a little 20
i was surprised at how big the variance is |
Comparing here to the "other", Richard, is interesting, particularly how self-regulating on the other has eased mischief to the margin, a triumph of the spirit if there ever was one.

Edgar,
Are you saying that you found the original Skeleton Butt Plate off your gun? |
Ha, I'm lucky when I can find my glasses in the morning, but not that lucky.
By 'correct', what I really meant was that I had found one to fit a #1 size butt. It would be pretty esoteric to make a study of any differences between Meriden and Ilion made parts, such as the SSBP, but this one, bearing a very late Remington era SN is just the same as a much earlier Meriden gun. I would guess it was made well ahead, in Meriden, and when the factory inventory was packed up and sent to Ilion, it had yet to be stamped with a SN. |
I was guessing that's what you meant, but that would have been a hell of a story if you had the original one kicking around on your work bench.
