Urban Ducks

Cold and two inches of ice at the boat ramp, but the greenheads made my day. FYI: The backdrop of our hunt was downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

A couple of old duck clubs in the Cleveland area in the latter part of the 19th century come to mind. Which one were you hunting from?... marsh?... point?

No marsh, no point. We were on Lake Erie pushed up against a break-wall that protects downtown Cleveland. Those famous duck clubs (e.g., Winous Point) and their productive marshes are about one hour west, and most likely thoroughly iced over.

That looks like fun. I have heard that there is great duck hunting around the Washington D.C. area within sight of the city

Have you seen The Meadowlands near the NY/NJ border within sight of the Empire State Building?

I don't know if hunting is allowed there but it is a waterfowl mecca!

I see these pictures and wonder - with the urban mentality being what it is these days - how long before we have the issues out British shooting friends have - where hunts are interrupted by armed response teams - even police helicopters when someone reports the shots fired

might just be me- i don't even like shooting towards a road even when it a very long safe way off.

"where hunts are interrupted by armed response teams - even police helicopters when someone reports the shots fired"

I was interrupted this year, first in about 15. Mind you I was sitting on the City/municipality line and shooting into the municipality. Helicopter first, circling high over head then 4 cop cars and 2 guys jump out with the AR14's, flac jackets, boots, the hole nine yards. Interesting when I told them they were City cops and had no jurisdiction in the municipality. When they insisted they did i told them to call the dispatch and double check. That ended that. No real trouble from them. Shots fired so they had to respond to a complaint.

I've spent many a day in Cleveland but never shot a duck there.

I remember reading an article years ago about a group of guys who had found a loophole and were hunting brant very close to NYC. They had some trials and tribulations, but the gunning was supreme.

A decoy-carving friend of mine with a bizarre sense of humor facetiously wondered what it would take to decoy the bread-eating mallards in the local cemetery on the outskirts of Detroit, so he made up a slice of bread decoy.
