Winchester M21 Deluxe Skeet
...looking for some M21 input. How many of you fellas have seen a "Deluxe Skeet" model? The gun is so marked on the floorplate & is listed as such in the Cody letter but I find no mention of that "grade" in my references.
Pretty cool gun, factory 2 bbl set... 30" F&F and 28" WS1 & WS2. 12ga. Thanks, Tom |
I know the early guns were marked on the trigger plate. But i thought that they were just marked "skeet" and "Tournament Skeet". I do not recall hearing of a "Deluxe Skeet". But it must have been an offering.
Check with Scottie on it. He may have something to add. |
Tom, apologies for not responding quickly to your email. Here goes. The Deluxe Grade was a short lived grade (around 1950) that replaced the Custom Grade guns and preceded the Custom Built Grade guns. Unlike the Custom Built Grade, few Deluxe Grade guns had rounded frames, but did have the forend inlay and a more extensive checkering pattern than standard skeet and trap grade guns. The wood was generally fancier than lower grades also. There are Deluxe, Deluxe Field, Deluxe Skeet, and Deluxe Trap Grade guns. They are stamped as such on the floorplate. They are scarce because of their short production life. I believe they are only listed in the 1950 catalog. I have to add that this information only refers to pre-1960 guns. Grading is much different after 1960.

Thanks boys.
Murph, very interesting... I figured you'd have it filed away in your memory bank. Yes, this gun does have fancier wood & checkering & checkered butt. Not a rounded frame. Cody has it started & finished February 1949.... made for Sears Roebuck & Co...... ahhh, yes, those were the days. t |
I would love to see some pictures of this gun.

I'm gonna try to get that done sooner than later.

That's a beauty! It's hard to imagine an era when you could buy a fine shotgun from Sears Roebuck.
Boy how times have changed. |
Model 21 Skeet gun
Tom I do like your gun.:)
Here is a 21 Winchester similar to your gun. Gun was made in 1933 and lettered as a tournament grade 2 barrel set with odd chokes on the 30 In. barrels. Gun was built with a round action, and straight stock. Gun has no markings on the floor plate. Also the point of impact for the 30 IN. barrels was ((to shoot high)) , which they do shoot high. Gun also has much history with Abercrombie and Fitch, and was a New York gun for most of its life. I have looked at a few 21s and owned some, but I'am confused on much of the things that surround the 21 Winchesters. Maybe our man Murph, and Reseacher will give us their opinion on the two barrel sets from Winchester. How common, barrel lengths, chokes, Sights , another options. I think the 21 Winchesters were made to shoot, but that is just my opinion. (( Maybe)) |
As I have posted before, my 20 gauge two barrel set is described as a "Skeet" gun in the Cody letter, but is not marked on the floor plate. Both sets of barrels are chambered for 3" shells, - 26" IC/MOD AND 30 " MOD/FULL
