what is a iron cross mark on the barrel flat mean? it's a early Remington gun.

I believe in The Parker Story it is one of the few stamps that it's meaning is not understood.

I bet it was a worker's stamp. I used to work in a machine shop and many of us had a special stamp we would place on parts. Mine was BB and my brother was CIII (it is still his nick name) We did it with a sense of pride; plus if a part was rejected by an inspector we knew it was our screwup.

Some early 20th century Colt revolvers have the iron cross marking on the barrel address.

I don't think it's a simple workers stamp, if it were, unknown marks like it would be far more common.
