Can't seem to upload a normal size pic for forum profile picture.

Is there a trick or size limit to get the upload complete?

Yes. It needs to be quite small

From the avatar loading page
"Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 125 by 125 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)."
