Solid rib vs vent rib question

If you had 2 DHE straight grip trap guns in good solid condition in serial number range 230k all things being equal........ 32" barrel, beaver tail, single trigger.........but one with a solid rib and one with a vent rib what would value difference be if there is a difference?

Brett Souder 02-21-2016 01:08 PM

According to the Blue Book Of Gun Values it would be worth 40-50% more depending on gauge.

George M. Purtill 02-21-2016 02:57 PM

40-50 % seems way high but it is at least 25% to me. Maybe some people couldn't care, but I would.
Some people think the VR detracts from the lines.
It's in the eye of the beholder.

Personal preference would dictate whether someone may buy a gun or not, especially it lf it is going to be shot. But from a collector and rarity standpoint, the Vent Rib gun would command the premium. Assuming condition was comparable.

Assuming a fairly high condition solid rib gun at $5500, I would price a near identical vent rib gun at $6500. Minty guns, maybe $7500 and $9500.

Thanks!

I think George and Dean have a good view on value difference by the numbers. Other comments on personal preference are good things to think about relative to your shooting eye and preference of style.

I want to meet that fellow who only needs one long barrel, tight choke Parker. Watch the obituaries as well as Julia's auctions.

If memory serves TPS says only about 4% of the guns had vent ribs.

I'm thinking such a gun - 12ga, beavertail, 32" tubes, single trigger - begs a vent rib.

So, the vent rib gun would sell 5X faster than the solid rib gun and would bring a premium...and I think the premium would be $2K or more.
