New Brass Shells
 

I just got my 10 gauge 2 5/8” shells from Track of the Wolf today. They are very nice, you can’t even compare them to the Magtech ones I have in 12 gauge. Though I suppose you get what you pay for. I am going to load these up with Black Powder for Sunday. I ordered 30 and now I wish I ordered 50, which is fixable.

I know these are going to create extra work, but they are just too cool. They also look way too nice in the gun!

I’ll give a "range" report.

Those are a definite must-have for show. Maybe, with nylon inserts, they'd make nice snap-caps too.

I shot BP in my 12 ga Trojan a number of times last year with a batch of Magtech shells. A lot of fun but I soon got tired of all the work needed to clean and recondition the shells. Now I use roll crimped Cheddite paper hulls. Not as classy but a lot less work.

Very nice. I used to load the brass 12ga - had 150 of them, but got tired of all the work. But after of looking at those, I may order 10 or so - they look cool.

OK now you have done it. I am going to order some to turkey hunt with. If you have an ultrasonic cleaner it gets a lot easier to clean them.

PGCA member Forrest Grilley from Track of the Wolf makes these hulls. They are all I use in my 10 gauge for hunting. I wouldn't want all the work for high capacity target shooting. Ultra Sonic cleaning is a good idea. Wayne what solution do you use?

I loaded up my 30 shells with 3 drams of Black Powder and 1 1/8oz. of shot last night. I'll have 30 empty shells again by the end of the day!

I had been considering an ultra sonic cleaner anyway, so this would be one more reason.

I use citric acid. Run it twice through and after they dry throw them into the tumbler for an hour. You will be surprised. Very little work.

These shells, and my "new" lifter did well today. The gun shot much better with these brass shells than the plastic ones I loaded up by hand. I also think 3 drams(instead of 2 3/4) with 1 1/8oz. of shot helped. I did use 2 - 1/2" pre-lubed 9 gauge wads just to fill up the case. I had read where that can mess up the pattern. However, after shooting these today I wouldn't change a thing. I went 5/6 on 2 stations and 6/6 on one, which all I can ask for. I missed a few easy ones, but that happens. I did find out that I can pattern the gun at this sporting clays place I go to, which I will do this week.

So all in all I am happy with these. I am amazed at how well they worked an would hunt with them. I may have to try for a turkey myself this spring.

No sonic cleaner yet, so they are soaking in water with some white vinegar now.

Back when I loaded the 12ga brass shells I found too many cushion wads blew patterns. You'll just have to try different loads to see what works. Also found too thick a OS wad did the same [ didn't like the .062 wad - the .032 was good ].Good luck.

I had a chance to do some patterning yesterday. Using 2 Fiber wads did open the pattern up, though that might have helped me with clays. I am going to try 1 Fiber wad and see if that makes a difference. I am having fun learning and experimenting with ll of this. Hopefully, I can put it all together in time form some spring turkey hunting.
