Laurel Mountain Forge Permalyn finish?
 

Was talking to a guy about refinishing a wood stock I had and he really suggested this product and the wood sealer as giving a much better finish then Tru oil. Anyone have any experience with this product?

i used the stains on each of my builds- but used the Permalyn finish once-

lots of folks seem to like it- but i did not think it was very durable- wet wool mittens lifted it off in a few spots, i may have applied it wrong- but have finished several guns - flintlocks and doubles, with other products and never had that issue with any others

of course- on the other hand, you could always avoid wet wool mittens :rolleyes:

Permalyn is my favorite finish, sprayed or applied by hand. What experience I have had with TruOil is that it is good for thick, built-up finishes.

I am wanting to put a high gloss browning type finish on an old 50s Era 870 and this was suggested, so I was seeing if anyone had used it.

I use their sealer a lot.

If you want a high gloss browning type finish, you should be looking at Laquers, urithanes or 2 part epoxy type finishes. All in spray applications. Not hand rubbed oils.

Isn't LMF a polyurethane? I like the high gloss look of my early 60s superposed, but am not confident in my abilities to quite achieve that finish so a guy I know on shotgunworld suggested LMF. He didn't think I would be able to achieve quite that look, but he thought it would serve me better then Tru oil which I have used previously.

The tru oil spray will give you a high gloss finish if left as sprayed.

I think Permalyn is a urethane-modified oil.

We my father in law and I sawed up and planed some walnut slabs last weekend to test several finishes on.

After reading his copy of Flexner's book last weekend as well, I am going to be trying several finishes that fall in the wiping varnish category.

Permalyn, Benmatte, Fornby's Tung Oil(which apparently contains no tung oil), Waterlox, something else my father in law has, and I will also do some tru oiling, just so I can get them all good and compared.

I have some parker stain from csmc, but don't think i will need it for the 870. Got the wood stripped and am currently sanding it with 600 paper. Took forever to get that finish off, finally had to get a metal scraper after it.

While you are testing try a product called Watco, available most anywhere finishes are sold. I like it really well as it seems to me to be less subject to piling and running as it dries fast but gives you an opportunity to rub completely before becoming tacky. I have not used it on gun wood.
