What is xYY3?
 

I have a 20 grade, O frame, VHE I'am considering that has this stamp xYY3 on the barrel flats. What it in reference to? I'm on travel in MN hunting and away from my references. Can anyone help?

It's a Remington repair code and xYY3 indicates your Parker was manufactured on December 1952

I thought production stopped in 1942 ?

According to The Parker Story(Vol 1, pg-162), Remington assembled guns from parts into the 1960's but the date of the last Parker assembled is not known.

Yep.... the x is the month, the YY is the year and the last digit represents the action: 3=serviced, 2=had a barrel order (not originally assembled), 4=was returned as received and 5=was an employee sale. If only the month and year are coded then it's the date of manufacture.

So the 3 as a suffix indicates it was serviced on the mo./ye. Indicated.

Okay, so what do we know? Only that the gun was serviced by Remington at some point? I don't understand how/why December 1952 was determined. Should I have some concern about buying this gun? Would a letter stipulate actually what repairs or services were performed on this gun? I'd like to know more before I purchase this gun which the serial number indicates was built in 1930, before being bought by Remington.

A letter won't tell you anything about service or repairs. Look at it as the gun was serviced by the factory 22 years after manufacture a plus and not done by a hack smith. Your concern should be what the condition of the gun tells you about it now and the service code shouldn't cause any additional alarm in my opinion.

You should take a few pictures and post them here so folks can tell you more about it. Does it say "Parker Bros" on the receiver sides? Or just "Parker" on the bottom of the receiver? The later Remington Parkers are quite often very nice with much nicer wood than Parker had put on them.
