Yikes!
I was doing a little internet research when I came upon this image:
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...pselttsdq5.jpg I'm not sure what is going on here, and I'm not sure I want to know ! |
I have dove and quail and even shot skeet with lots of old timers who are in the habbit of walking with their shotgun resting on the toe of their boot.
Even knew one gentleman who had washers on the toes of his hunting boots so that the barrel would rest on his foot and not move. Doesn't sound particularly safe, but to my knowledge, none of these gentlemen ever blew off their foot. |
You see many trapshooters resting their muzzles on top of their foot between shots. They make leather or pastic fobs for this. Difference is that the gun is open when doing so. Of course there are always some who are the super experts on gun safety who say it's dangerous.
I guess when you look at it that way it's not so bad...maybe I'm silly but I don't think I'm in favor of aiming a closed shotgun at any part of my body.
Are we sure this fellow was not just resting the gun on his foot while he took a picture of it? Clay target shooters rest open guns on their feet, not closed guns. I've never seen anyone walking while hunting with a gun on the toe, but then I've only been hunting with a shotgun for about 57 years, maybe four or five years before that without a gun.
I just don't point the business end of the gun at any part of anyone.
He is probable not hunting or shooting trap unless the woods have laminated wood flooring.
Muzzle discipline applies everywhere, anytime with a gun unloaded or not. If the action is open - ok. But if it's closed then this is a no-no in my opinion.
Here in Michigan, there is a nationally-ranked skeet shooter who is missing a toe - just like this picture
My wife's uncle lost a toe to that old habit of resting the gun on his foot. That mistake a few years before WWII kept him out of the war.
