Quick Question
I am reloading 28 Gauge AA HS and the damn varying hull length's are giving me fits crimping.. How do I adjust for the hulls that seem to be about a 1/4" short.. I am separating them out now so where would I make my adjustment to get a good crimp.. (using a Mec 600 and waa28hs wad)..
|
Not sure, but believe that's a problem with the Win hulls. About all you can do is set up for the hulls that have the same length. Good luck.

Is it the difference in height of base wads that's causing the problem in length or is it simply the overall shell length?

Some times I will separate loaded AA's with open crimps (due to inconsistent OAL) and close the small opening with a drop of white glue. Get a box full of glued crimp shells shoot them up and throw the hulls away.
Gets rid of the short ones. William |
While I do not reload the 28 I shoot with several guys that do and I know they prefer the Win. case for its longevity. Throwing away good hulls, especially the 28 is like throwing away gold but 1/4 inch is quite a bit of case length discrepancy to deal with. I've loaded many thousands of 20 ga Gun Clubs that are notorious for varying in length but never 1/4 inch. My solution was to split the difference with press settings to get acceptable results on all lengths. May not work for you though.

Set up for the short shells and live with swirl in the crimp in the long shells ( swirls don't leak shot ,holes in the center do ) although as said before a 1/4" is quite a difference , my not work with that small of diameter hull .
or........... you could cut the long ones down to the same length as the short ones . |

Would anyone recommend a shorter wad base to compensate for a crimp that will close and if so which wad to replace a waa28 ??? The 3/4 load is to high to get a crimp..

John,
I may miss understand your last post. The Win HS hulls use a different wad than the standard Win AAs. You should use the waa28-HS wad. This may not help, but ... Ken |
I apologize.. It is a waa28HS.. I usually have all the hulls in a bin and don't pay a lot of attention as I grab and load them.. I am now going to separate them and if I can find a way to get the shot and wad a little lower ( the difference of the two pictured ) I should be in good shape.. I hope.

You could use a shot card under the crimp on the short ones and leave your press set up as is.
