Hi,
I recently purchased a project hammered damascus shotgun for restocking. It has Edwinson C Green Cheltenham Eng. Winner of 2 first prizes field trials agents G&A Hayden Jacksonville Ill. on the rib. Is this one of his top grade products or a run of the mill field grade? Can the dent in the barrel be repaired to make it a shooter? It is a 10 Ga.

nice engraving on the locks- to know if it is one of HIS best, I would think you need to compare it to other examples of his work

Birmingham proofs?

the dent looks more like a gash- it may require welding to fill- you should get the advice of a knowledgeable vintage gunsmith (the guns - not the man himself )

Those dogs look identical to dogs known to be the work of Jacob Glahn.

This Parker was engraved by Glahn. Compare the dogs.

The second one was also engraved by Jacob Glahn.

This is a Birmingham gun of mid quality. Action probably sourced from W.& C. Scott. The barrel flaw is hard to judge from your photo. Best to send the barrels to Kirk Merrington for a professional evaluation.

If you plan to stock this gun yourself, I wish you luck. And a lot of time. Especially if you are a novice. Is the original stock beyond help? That's the best course if at all possible.

Regarding proofs
It has the crossed swords with crown over V followed by 1 ' B over 12m not for ball. I understand that this is a Birmingham Proof.
It has a cartouch with either 10G or ? C G on both barrells.
The one that I don't recognize is a square C ( a square rotated 90 deg and open on the right side.

Hello,
Except for checkering, I have finished restocking the E Green with a tiger walnut blank that came with the gun. The gun was missing the trigger guard and both hammers. I am concerned about the strength in the wrist because of the highly figured wood and the fact that the grain passes through the wrist at 45 Degs. to the axis of the stock in the vertical plane. I may not ever shoot it but if I did can anything be done to reinforce the wrist?
I have included a somewhat unsatisfactory detail picture of the dogs on the lockplate

Mr. Chaney:
Much depends on what you want to do with this gun. If you intend to keep it and shoot it, then I'd simply try light 2 7/8" loads in it first. Maybe no more than 1 1/8 oz. at around 1150 fps. Then keep an eye out for cracks. It may last fine for years.

Otherwise, metal rods could be installed through the wrist/hand of the gun to help reinforce it. However, this is NOT a job for the novice.

I'd just shoot it first. The stock looks to be stout enough for modest loads. However, lock plate pin appears to be a bit short of full seating...

Thanks for the advise. The lockplates went in hard after the finish was applied.
I will have to scrape some of the finish off the lockplate inletting.
