Nitro Short 10 load
 

Just though I'd post this for guys with Short 10's that can handle modern pressures. I wanting a Short 10 ( 2 7/8 " ) load for My Ithaca Super 10 that is not low pressure . For good performance and good for cold weather . I wanted a good 1 1/2 oz turkey load that was some where between 1150- 1250 fps and between 9000- 11000 psi . So I sent this load to Tom Armburst for testing .

Fed hull cut to 2 7/8 "
Fed 209a primer
23 grains Hodgdon International Clays
Rem SP-10 wad
1 1/2 oz #6 lead
6 Fold Crimp .050 -.060 deep

For 5 shot string

1177, 1181, 1166, 1179, 1179 - Ave 1176 fps EV 15

11000, 10700, 9800, 11100, 10400 - Ave 10600 psi EV 1300

I also plan on using this load for non-tox using Niceshot with a reduced payload of either 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 oz

Wow - I would have thought a 1 1/4oz of shot would be more than enough, but to each his own. I don't like a lot of recoil - my shoulder hurts just thinking about it. Good luck on your turkey hunt.

sounds like my kinda loads i like plenty of punch on the turkeys end...i use a slip on limb savor to help with the kicking end....charlie

I haven't the time nor the energy to look up the he article in Double Gun Journal of turkeys being taken by Parker's in 10 gauge through .410. You hit them right and you can eat them.

I bet I won't even feel it when taking a shot at live game , especially in a 9lb gun . Because you are shooting at a turkey's head and neck , the more pattern density the better to a certain point . If your going to shoot a 10ga might as well take advantage of it,s potential .

I haven't patterned it yet but I'll it will be good to 50 yards if needed.

This load is a good base line that can reduced to 1 1/4 oz easily for those that do like recoil .

Mark, I am surprised you get either those velocities or pressures with the SP-16 wad. I would expect a lot of gas blow by. Are you using a 10 ga. over powder card or felt wad beneath it?

No just the SP-10 wad by itself.

Tom and I thought the same thing . In trying to develop a Bismuth load in the Remington Hull I used the BPI PT 1044 wad and it came in way over pressure , so I drop the charge by 2 grains and used the SP wad and the pressures where almost identical ( way over ) so I regrouped and am now trying it with Unigue . Seems the SP wad seals pretty good

By the way this same load in the Remington hull from Precision Reloading , came in way over pressure by about 1900 psi .

Wait, let me get this straight - are you using a SP-10 with a 16ga filler, or a SP-16 wad in a 10ga shell ? I don't have a SP-16 wad, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that you're gonna get a whole lot of powder migration past a 16ga wad in a 10ga shell. You'd have to keep the shells upright not to. And if they lay in your shooting coat shaking around while you walked, just how much powder would leak by ? I put 16ga filler wads inside SP-10's.

I apologize , I am using the SP10 wad not the Sp16 wad . I did even catch it when asked about sealing . I mostly load for the 16ga , should make a lot more sense now.
