Hammer gun with stars on the stock

My local dealer has an 1891 gun with a single star on each side of the stock. Unfortunately I don't have a pic today (probably tomorrow). Any thoughts as to the possible meaning of the stars? The gun in question is a grade 0 standard 12 ga no-frills gun.

the meaning would be to the person that added them after market

If in the head of the stock, inletted to hide the pinning of the stock.

In a round about way I guess. Missed that part about grade 0. With the 1891 I was thinking hammerless.
