Remington Parker Stock reinforcement
 

I have made observations recently on two different buttstocks that I believe to be Remington (Ilion) replacements on Parkers. They both exhibit a "Dogbone" shaped piece of wood inletted into the head of the stock. Clearly a measure to reinforce the head and prevent it from cracking.

Below are photos of what I am speaking of. The second one was a pre-1910 gun so it had the additional inletting for the top lever mechanism. Which suggests that these Dogbones were put into stock blanks as they came off Remington duplication equipment.

I am not sure as to when these guns may have been restocked by Remington. The one had an actual Remington grip cap on it.

Has anyone else observed this Dogbone in the head of Ilion built or restocked Parkers?

Bryan I recently purchased a early 20 gauge DHE SN 163748 with a replacement stock. The gun has Remington repair code showing that it was at Remington in May of 1945. Not sure what was done of course. That said it has a Grip cap that is identical to the late model grip cap with Parker on it, except instead of Parker it has Remington name instead. The stock has a checkered butt, and the dimensions are exactly the same as the 20 gauge Remington very late era Skeet gun that was sold by the family.

I've seen similar dog-bone pieces inlet in the head of Remington Model 1894 stocks.

i wonder how this idea would hold up as a repair to a de-oiled and expoxy'ed stock

Here is a photo of the grip cap one stock that I pictured above. It says Remington on it.
It is a CHE. The stock has drop points, but the cheek panels are not shaped quite correct as compared to a traditional meriden gun. But the checkering on the wrist is a DH pattern.

Brian, what timing. I wondered when I received this gun if possibly Remington might have used a Remington grip cap on later guns or guns sent back for stock replacement. The grip cap on my gun is exactly the same as the one you have pictured. I am still having problems posting pictures. I will send a picture of the grip cap on my gun to you if you wish to post. I guess finding a few guns may not prove that Remington used their grip caps on guns sent back, but it may with a few more "finds" add a little bit more history to the Remington after market services.

Brian- what gauge was the stock with the Remington grip cap?

I have seen at least one, maybe two grip caps like that.

I would really like to see more Remington hard rubber butt plates like the one I have posted pics of in the past. It is on a 16 ga. GHE transition gun.
