Is it ok to store guns in trunk cases for long periods of time?

Moisture is the key. If the case can be placed where moisture and humidity are controlled, yes. All though, there is no fire or safety towards the firearm stored that way.

Thanks John. I only have 4 or 5 in cases and I keep them in the case in my safe.

If there is any humidity the answer is no.... Just ask Steve Barnett, on Friday I picked up the Repro B grade 410 he had, on the side facing the felt, a light covering of red (rust) was on the receiver side.:crying: He said last weekend he had been a gun show on Brays Island, they wiped down all of the guns each morning and each evening and when they left they wiped them down again, problem was there was moisture caught in the felt and that had time to cause the rust. I don't think I would take the chance.

Has Steve reduced the price on the little gun?

I had a small bore fox temporarily stored in a Merkel gun case that had somehow gotten damp. Between my house and my gunsmith house (5.5 hours away). The gun was already starting to pick up rust. Thank goodness I hadn't put it in that case and stuck it in my gunsafe. Can't imagine what it would have done to the gun long term.

It may have as much to do with where the case is stored as anything

I have a Birmingham muzzleloader that came to me in a well worn case- no telling how long it was in there, the metal was dry and rust free. I put the gun, in its case upstairs and when I got it out after while there was rust- cleaned it - oiled it- put it away and the rust reappeared. after a couple go arounds, I cleaned the gun and set it on top of the case- no rust since

i don't have an issue in the safe- so I can only assume it was the combination of the case and lack of air circulation and the humidity in this house that was doing it

Those little heat wands that fit through the back side of most gun safes work wonders in keeping my guns completely rust free.

I always use bags of silica gel--it picks up moisture that is in the case, keeping it off the hardware. It can be dried to remove the moisture once it becomes contaminated.
