1889 Remington Assistance.....
 

.....needed! After removing the forend, is there a special trick to removing the barrels on a late model 1889 Remington? Everything works smoothly and has been maintained well. There is a screw in the front of the receiver that retains pieces for the bolt stop (I think). Do I need to do something with it? Thanks!

I got it! I made a couple of off-set screwdrivers and managed to remove the plug screw on the water table that retains the bolt stop cam(?). Once I got the cam out with bent-nose tweezers, the barrels came right off. Some one had installed the little cam upside down, which allowed the barrels to be unlocked, but not removed! The breech face is immaculate! There is NO indication of firing. The bores are perfect, too. Not bad for a 'field grade' shotgun with 110+ years under its belt. I will post some photos after I clean the dried crud from the working parts.

As far as dating these guns, all I could find is that the serial number range leapt into the 200000 bracket sometime after 1900. Mine is 229018. Would the approximate date of manufacture be a result of an extrapolation process?

According to the serial number chronology in the late Charles Semmer's book, Remington Double Shotguns, serial number 229018 would be a 1902 gun. The chronology was compiled from surviving factory shipping records.
