Cans and Redheads are my favorite birds to hunt, and darn good eating also!!
I can't wait to get my Parker back , I plan on trying to harvest all our local duck species with it next season. |
Man that is a heap of slick heads! I've killed quite a few widgeon in my life but have never been in what I'd call a proper "slick head shoot".
DLH |
MH never heard the term "slick" heads for widgeon, but I love it!!
They can be a very hard bird to shoot some days, they get to about 70 yards and do what we call the widgeon freak out. Other days they drop right in. One dim days or against a hillside dotted with snow the first thing you see on the drakes is that white stripe on the forehead We also call them cotton tops , robbers, and pie balds. The other things we call them I can''t type here:shock::shock: |
I picked that local name up from some Mississippi River hunter friends ands always liked it. Robber and Baldpate are other old time named I've heard guys say. I had a memorable moment with a big drake widgeon over in Canada this year. Whistled him right into the blocks and made a one shot kill.

I did get into the European Widgeons pretty good one night in Scotland several years back. Another moment to remember.
|
I had a Eurasian widgeon in the decoys one day, but had just set up on an afternoon hunt and didn't have a gun out yet!!
He was 25 yards away swimming around the decoys, thats the only one I have ever seen in 40 years of hunting |
