Parker Skeleton Butt Plate
 

Gentlemens:

I was wondering if there was a market for a reproduction of the Parker skeleton plate. I have an original here and it seems that I could, with a bit of work, modify my plate into a replica of the Parker plate.

I need to make one for a client and was wondering if it would be worth the expense of making tooling and such, or if I would be best served just spending some quality time with a file...

If you can produce one that is more authentic looking than those currently being produced I will say yes. There are however, a few manufacturers/suppliers of skeleton butt plates now.

Glenn, I would continue to produce your excellent skeleton buttplate and let the stocker and/or engraver worry about bringing it into shape. They are going to do the final shaping anyhow. By the way, will we be seeing you in Sanford next month?

Glenn,I would think it would be worth making some if you had a wire EDM or a CNC and could just program and go. But to make them on a manual machine or by hand I don,t know that it would be worth the time and expense. After all this is kind of a niche market and I don,t think you could sell hundreds for a return on investment. But few of them damascus ones I would think would sell like "hot cakes"....:)

There are some dimensional differences between my plate and the mid sized Parker, but the real issue is the location of the top screw hole. The Parker is located at the tip of the heel and angles downward. My plate has the hole lower and it goes straight in.

While not exactly the same, I think that if the hole could be moved the plate could "pass".

In any event, thanks again for your help. I will ruminate over this for a while...

Glenn, leaving the holes to the stocker may be an option. Your holes and screws are definitely a "piece of work", but maybe one or more can be left undrilled if requested.

Also need a skeleton buttplate

I am in the process of restoring a DHE 20 gauge and am very interested in a skeketon buttplate myself. This happens to be a personal gun and would like to get it as close to original as possible. If you were to tool up, when would you anticipate a final product? It appears you are already making one for a client - would you be interested in making another if even you don't tool up?

I also haven't been able to find a manufacturer that is close to a Parker original. Galazans and McFarland are the only two that I have been able to get my hands on. Are there others I should be considering?

Steve, besides Glenn's and the two you mention I can't think of another at the moment. A search engine might turn up another one or two if you're diligent about it.
