Into the wind
 

It still amazes me the distance at which a dog can gather a scent cone when the wind is just right.. This Rooster was in the small group of trees to the left..

I just found out this evening how far off a dog can pick up scent. Apparently my 6 month old setter just went into heat for the first time today and as we were running her in the fields near home a dog of questionable lineage made a bee-line for her from a house almost a quarter mile away. It was a good bit of work but we were able to keep them apart until we were able to get her safely out of "harm's" way.

Their noses are just incredible!

Yow...... I hope it was at the very least another Setter....

Might have been a bird there to Craig but my legs were not gonna find out... I have covered that much ground for a bird Gobbling to beat hell though... :shock:

I had a Golden Retriever many years ago, each time she went into heat a blue tick hound took up residence on the front porch, stayed there for days. I could not find the owner any place near us. I have no idea how far he came.


John, yes it can be a long walk- I had a setter that would lock up on a woodcock from a real distance (maybe not that far)- you could not walk in from the side, you would walk in front and look back a couple times to make sure you were on the line to the bird.

Yes, It still amazes me that they lock up when scenting at let alone 10yrds when I can't smell the bird at 10 inches.

Frank, maybe you'd make a better retriever than pointer. How are you in the water?

I think we've probably all seen the signs on the lodge bathroom which announce "pointers" and "setters"
