Safe barrel wall thickness in the FAQ question
I know this may sound silly, but I just read the well written article in the FAQ from the main page on barrel wall thickness.
I am not clear if the article is referring to Damascus steel or fluid steel, it gives plenty of thickness dimensions but I am under the impression the fluid steel would be a thinner design. Could I get some help on that ? Thank you, Tom |
Tom: there is more information here, including the CIP recommendations for Fluid Steel barrels.
https://docs.google.com/a/damascuskn...vwLYc-kGA/edit We now know that the tensile strength of Pattern Welded barrels is about 1/2 of even vintage fluid steel, reinforcing the importance of using loads that match ballistically those for which the gun was designed. Until about 1920 that would be 3 - 3 1/4 Dram Eq. with 1 1/4 oz. shot with a pressure of at least 10,000 psi https://docs.google.com/a/damascuskn...EK8OtPYVA/edit https://docs.google.com/a/damascuskn...hIiY62Hx4/edit |
I reviewed the FAQ and it might be better to remove this image
http://pic20.picturetrail.com:80/VOL.../407171965.jpg The image shows the standard dimensions of each barrel tested as part of the 1891 Birmingham Proof House Report from "The Field" March 7, 1891 Vol 77:325 and are NOT wall thickness recommendations Note the chamber has not been bored http://books.google.com/books?id=inQCAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA9 |
Thank you Sir
That is a wealth of information. Tom |
