can you use paint thinner to remove oil?

I have used up my acetone and alcohol leaching oil out the past 2 weeks. I have a can of paint thinner/mineral spirit s. Can I use it the same as the acetone to leech oil out?

I thought I had it good, but after 3 days the oil came back up in the head area of the stock...

Try using TSP. It works extremely well and does not damage the wood.

I believe acetone will just get the first 1/4" or so of the oil out of the stock and then latter the oil deeper in will come back to the surface.

oil removal

Since you live in Galveston, you have some hot weather. Leave the stock in the hot sun and come back an hour later and you will be amazed at the oil that has leached out of the stock. Take a rag soaked in paint thinner, wipe off the oil and repeat the process. Jim Garrett

Mineral spirits is a much milder solvent than acetone. Acetone will break down and dissolve oxidized and hardened oils . Mineral spirits is often used as a diluent(solvent) for oils dissolving unoxidized oils such as linseed or tung., but will have little effect on those older oxidized oils. It may reach some that have penetrated deep and have lacked the oxygen to oxidize and harden and help bring them to the surface. It will not harm anything, just let the stock dry completely before applying whatever finish you prefer.
