Reloading 28-ga. 2 3/4" RST hulls?
Anyone here reloading their 28-ga. 2 3/4" RST hulls and have a favorite recipe they'd be willing to share?
TIA, Greg |
I load Rem STS or Win AA hulls personally. And have used 11.6 grs. of Universal Clays, Win 209 primer, with a Duster wad and 3/4 oz of 8 1/2 shot for years. It's very mild at about 1100 fps, and works great in my English doubles. As long as it crimps OK, it should be fine in RST hulls... which I believe are Fiocchi.

John, I hate to hijack a thread, but can you tell us about your English 28 gauges? Most of us are working on acquiring our first English 28 gauge. It sounds like you may have more than one.

Mr. Murphy:
I shall try to keep the thread on-topic as well. But will merely say for now that the above load works nicely in my C. H. Weston back action hammergun and my Albert Hollis boxlock. Both with original 2 1/2-inch chambers. I will start a new thread on them soon in a different topic category. I am humbled by your interest. |

Egad. I've used this load for so long I can't even remember where I got it. But I never get close to published maximums in any double gun load. I just checked Hodgdon's site and they list this load as a "max" with 3/4 oz in STS cases so mine should be well under:
Hodgdon Universal Win. 209 PC28 13.5 12,400 PSI 1,200 fps And I apologize. I've since shifted to Claybuster wads with no detactable trouble/differences. |
I have used published 28 gauge loads from the Alliant and predecessor books for probably 40 years using Unique powder. When I came up with a 4 3/4 pound 28 gauge Francotte, I used the same load I had been using for skeet competition, but with just over 1/2 ounce of shot with a bit of filler and no change in the powder charge. I have 16 pounds of Unique, which is enough for the rest of my forseeable life. If I had some RST empties, I would use this powder and loads.
