Reddish Barrel Scratches?

Just curious when looking at my barrels in sunlight especially late afternoon there are some spots where it looks like there is reddish/orange scratches and such. I have dealt with rust on guns before and this isn't same thing. I know the barrels have been reblurd, but could this just be the steel showing through?

Sorry this feels like a really dumb question, but I am certain it isn't rust. It almost looks like it is under the bluing.

Anyway I will try to get some picks, thx for answering my really dumb question.

any chance some one cold blued damascus or twist barrels?

Bill Holcombe 07-24-2014 08:53 AM

It isn't uniform like that and its more splotchy or irregular. Plus, no designation on barrel of twist or Damascus.

What is the serial number of your gun? Lacking anything that would say what the barrel steel is, a serial number or date of production would lead us in the right direction to better determine what your barrels are made of. I think the late Remington Parkers are the only ones that do not have a legend on the top rib proclaiming the barrel steel. Is yours a late Remington Parker? Or have your barrels possibly been replaced at some point?

Take a look at the splotchy or irregular barrel discoloration on the 16 ga. hammer gun I have for sale on the last page of another thread...
Does yours look like that?

I am going to have to try work camera to get a decent pic. It says Vulcan steel. Serial number is 199020. Was made in 1921. Wondering if previous owner cold blued it and these are water spots.

Thanks Bill - that rules out composite barrels of any kind.

Ok, I am an idiot

Yeah it finally occurred to be this morning that it is indeed not rust, I believe it is just where the bluing has rubbed away. It is much more noticeable in red sunlight which is why it freaked me out as I hadn't noticed them until yesterday evening when the sun set was coming through the window.

Sorry, I was right it was a stupid question. I will have to get this reblued at some point, but not the rush I was beginning to freak myself out about.
