No Markings on Barrel Flats

2 Attachment(s)
Below is the barrel flat of a DH. SG, DT, with 30" barrels with a flat raised rib circa 1900. It is like this in the Book, but no mention of the rib is made. There are no stampings for the Titanic steel barrels, or inspection marks. Is this unusual?

Ed,Very interesting. I have seen barrels without inspectors stamps and also with an empty circle and not material stamp.I have also seen them with no frame size or gauge stamp. But I have never seen a set with no barrel material stamp at all.In fact I just recently had here a set of unfinished Parker barrels that were lent to me by Austin. They had the circle stamp and no barrel material stamped inside. This tells me that this stamp was applied fairly early on in the barrel making process.

My factory Titanic barreled ex-Capt. Money CH #87238 does not have a barrel material stamp or "circle". A number of the barrel type stamps do not have "circles" at all.

What is the character stamped into the flat of the right barrel to the left of the 4?

It has the 3 stamped nearest the breech of the right barrel and we know this is the marking of the grade of the gun. In this case we know the barrels are not Damascus and we know the barrels are a grade 3 set so we should be able to extrapolate the obvious - that this is a set of Titanic Steel barrels.

Unmarked Barrel Flats

The two x 's over the braze joint (proof?) and the HT and A ( heat treated and annealed?) are also missing. Is it possible this barrel flat was a bit thick and needed a little milled off to be fitted?

Best, Austin
