8ga W W Greener

I have friend with an 8ga Greener in very good condition, no rust or pits etc. He got the gun from the family of the man who bought it new in Baltimore in 1898. Just wants some idea of value for insurance. Thanks for any help you give.

First, welcome to PGCA.

But to assess any gun such as this, it's best to have a look at it. If you could post some photos, they would help immensely.

Also, it's wise to keep in mind that the "worth" of such a classic gun depends on many factors beyond condition. Especially for an 8-bore. The final worth is what someone is willing to pay for it.

What is your serial number? My Greener Royal hammer gun is #28804, last gun made in 1885 according to Graham Greener. It is nitro proved for 2 1/2 ounces of shot in 3 3/4" cases. Yup, we need pictures to establish an approximate value.

We had a fellow bring a Greener in a month or so ago for some stock work . When he brought it in it had fluid steel 10 gauge barrels but they were thick and it was heavy . Come to find out he also has a set of damascus 8 gauge barrels at home . Seems the gun left the factory sometime in the 1890's as a damascus 8 gauge and was later returned to have a set of fluid steel 10's fitted . The fellow that owns this gun owns part of the "J Roberts Gun Company" . Not that means a whole lot but I think he bought them over there and then brought them here rather then finding them here .
