another project
 

i decided to take on another project, bid on two and ended up with both - don't ya hate it when that happens.

here is one of them.

I was pleasantly surprised when this arrived - I figured a 0 grade with the U on the action, but it lists a dollar grade ($55) 10 gauge. There are many issues but its better than the first pics I saw. The specs match the letter. This one came from the end of the Oregon Trail - it left St Louis in 1879 - wish it could talk

one replacement hammer - made with some bit of skill and care. the wood has issues above the locks, but the rest that is there is solid, I would really like to save it if I can. A solid keyed fore end

the 30" barrels were the best surprise, I knew there was pitting - I almost said no based on the pictures, but they turned out to be in better shape than I thought, and plenty of wall thickness. Overall, wood and metal very dirty, but the dirt (including paint fingerprints) seems to have offered a bit of protective coating. Even the faintest hint of case color on the water table. Can't see any pattern in the plain twist tubes as it sits but hopefully a Frontier pad will bring some out. It won't be a quick one to bring back, hopefully it will be fun trying.

almost here Charlie - pictures when it arrives - ten years younger - fishtail top lever 32 inch 10 2 frame R grade ( 0 grade range), actually only a few hundred numbers off my very early hammerless.

That gun doesn't look bad at all.

the metal should clean up fine. I will likely have the barrels refinished, I think it should make a fine shooter.

Not too bad at all Rick. I have seen alot worse successfully brought back. I have two projects here awaiting winter already. Hopefully they will be ready for the spring.

Not all that bad rick. And that hand filed hammer is not all that bad on it.
Bring it on by sometime soon for me to check It out.

the second one has been sitting in the UPS distribution center - just a few miles from me - according to the tracking - since 1:41 AM Thanksgiving day - that's a family holiday, everyone should enjoy it--

but who the heck gave UPS Friday off :banghead:

I have a back action lifter that I think is waiting for me at the post office. I am looking forward to it, although my goal for 2014 is more modern (1900-1940) guns.

Mills, please post pics of your Back Action gun when you can. What is the serial number and barrel steel?

Rick, I'm looking forward to seeing your second project gun also! David
