C.G Bonehill 10 ga
 

well im looking into buying a cg bonehill sxs 10 gauge hammer gun .
the seller said he will hold it for me for a few weeks. it has no pitting with mirror bores but darkening near the muzzle . guessin that's what pitting starts as ? not that worried about it since its near the muzzle. He says it still locks up tight and I like the price does anyone here hunt with a bonehill ? found a hammerless model as well but its 3 times as much i cant really justify that cost increase

Mirror bores in any old gun makes me want to check the wall thickness

Had a 28 ga Bonehill with 28" damascus barrels. Nice little boxlock but it weighed about the same as a Red Ryder BB gun so I traded her out for something a little more practical. Bonehill was a reputable maker but most if not all records were destroyed during the war so there is not much info available.

that's ashame about the records as it has all matching serial numbers , the hammer gun I mean . though I mostly want a field gun for small game hunting . the barrels look thick on the hammer gun cant tell on the hammerless model as he doesn't have any muzzle pictures etc. I asked briley about 10 gauge sleeves they don't sleeve for anything bigger than a 12 ga . though I don't think theres anything wrong with the hammer bonehill

The issue with your Bonehill barrels depends entirely on how severe the pits are, and if they can safely be honed out - and choke kept if any. Many times, light pitting is not an issue. Especially near the muzzle. If wall thickness about 3 inches back from the muzzle is over .025 they can probably be cleaned up. But... it's often just as well to polish the area and live with minor pits. Out there they present little danger.

Bonehill was a good maker. He used a lot of machines to make his guns. But they were generally well fitted.

i shoot a hammer 10 ga bonehill some..mine is pitted too but it does well with 1 1/4 ounce and 1 1/8 ounce shells...killed several squirls with mine... look at pete lesters red dot load in the 10 ga...its light on the gun and the shoulder... charlie

Well I put a payment n the old bonehill hammer gun , she doesn't have pitting just darkening near the muzzle but the barrels look thick . Honestly for 500$ I cant complain .I will post some pictures later .
Charlie im guessing the bonehills are 2 5/8" chamber ?

mine are 2 5/8 inch chambers..though i use the 2 7/8 inch lentgh hull in it... you will be pleased with the red dot loads... charlie

2 5/8 is the old British standard

will look up the reddot loads. Ive looked at brass 10 ga shells on track the wolf they are parker reproductions cases . Charlie you think I could use the rst 2 7/8 load ? would like to get it restored I like these old hammers guns .
I might bag some quail with it as we have a good population in our deer woods
