What is he looking at?

Does anyone know the story behind why this pheasant is always looking over his shoulder? I have thought maube it was the signature of a certain engraver but if you look at these photos the birds are not the same. I guess that doesn't mean the same guy couldn't have done them but is also an indication that more than one engraver carved this suspicious bird.

I think they are checking to see if the screws are buggered.

This must be it cause I don't own a gun without bogeyed screws!

Ray, the single bird on the left side is a very accurate representation of the now extinct Passenger Guinea. Thought to be the last member of the fowl family with lips rather than a beak. The lack of a tail was speculated to be the reason these birds were seldom reported to fly but got around by hitching a ride on any passing wagon or train: hence the name and the frequent depiction of them looking over their shoulder. HTH
