Thinking of buying a GH project
 

I have found a Parker GH 12gauge damascus in a local gun shop. I have been by to look at it twice now. The bore is clean and good with little to no visible pitting the case color is maybe 10% on the reciever. Only major problem is the stock behind the reciever was broken and repaired. It is the original stock though and has the shield in it still also has a rubber recoil pad that was installed sometime in the 1950s I'm guessing. The price is $750. Which I think is fairly reasonable. I'm planning on using this gun for hunting and clays every now and then. Only reason I have held off on the purchase is the fact it is Damascus barrel. I figured I'd ask the experts here their thoughts and opinions.

Good Damascus barrels are no reason to hold off, many of us shoot them with low pressure shells

can the shop give you the minimum wall thickness? what is the barrel length? if you have the serial number we may be able to confirm it as original

and if the stock repair is solid, and you can live with the pad- if all is good, i would say that is a good deal

As long as you have adequate barrel wall thickness, and no mechanical issues, you have a shooter.
I wish my Perazzi SC3 pigeon gun had Damascus barrels.

I can go get the wall thickness s/n and barrel legnth tomorrow. If the gun shop doesn't know the wall thickness how can I measure it out myself?

What frame size is it?
If the bores are good and outside finish looks to be original, then they most likely have not been messed with unless the bores have been worked over.
Only taking measurements will tell for sure.

No way to measure the wall thickness without special equiptment for the job.

As Brian says, it requires a special gauge, you just have to ask if they have the tool do it.

Thanks guys. I found a friend that has a bow thickness gauge. Ill let you know what I find out.

Check out minimum thickness in the front half of the tubes. And also check what it looks like in the breech end. I Usually refer to the thickens at the location of the forend loop.

my gunsmith likes 90 thousands in front of the chambers and 30 thousands minimum from the muzzles down to about a foot or so.
