so i have gotten my hands on a 1889 sxs 10ga parker. was my dads, his dads and so on. has been cleared to fire by a good gunsmith. both barrels have not been modified. and over all cosmetically its in moderate shape little ruff on the wood and some metal patina but not bad over all.

any idea what the initials js under the 3 is for/ who it is for

guess i have a 3 weight barrel but a number 2 frame. also frame says i have ejectors but i only have extractor on barrel, and yes serial numbers match all the way around.
i have numerous dates stamped on the frame. pat'd jan 18. aug 16 1887 then below that there is may 7 1889 and below the serial number it is mar 16 1875. are all of those the patented dates for numerous parts. or are a few of them the order date and delivery date.

The 3 on the barrel lug is the frame size, the 2 on the frame is the grade

the barrel weight should be an offset pair of numbers on the barrel flats

it should be a 10 gauge with 30 inch barrels,

Looks like a nice family air loom. Its hard to tell from your pictures but it dosnt look like it has been messed.

Remember that is 2 7/8 inch chambers. no modern ammo.

J.S. is probably the barrel contractor or inspector. John Stokes is best known for his patent for the Parker Bros. rebounding locks on hammerguns but his stamp, J.S. is most often seen on the barrel lug area up to about 1890.

indeed i have been looking for ammo in my local area for it but so far i have not found any. i know there are a few sites but i like to promote local business when possible.
thank you for the info on the initials. the pictures don't show the scratches on the stock or the faint surface rusting from lack of proper oiling/ cleaning over the years.
family history places this gun as a war piece i even have the army leather horse bag for it. the gun smith i took it to told me to put a $2,000 dollar insurance just in case it ever gets stolen. the sentimental value is more than i could insure it for or ever sell it for so it will forever remain a family piece.

supporting local business is noble, but in the case of low pressure short tens, it may be impossible.
