French Double Question
2 Attachment(s)
Do we have any experts on here that know who made this gun. It's a 16ga and weighs about 5-1/2 lbs. It was made in St Etienne, has the proof marks etc, but nowhere does it have a name written. I was thinking maybe the circle with RG in the middle might be a clue.
Thanks with crossed fingers, Casey |
Old French guns, at least for me, seem to be difficult to research on the net. This piece, http:// What is it?, has been a bit of a head scratcher for me. Yours being a bit newer, may give you an advantage in determining its maker.
Sorry i was of no help, but good luck in your search. Edit: sorry, I can't seem to get that link to work, that is the name of the thread though. |
Casey,
You will probably find the information you seek on the Double Gun Shop fourm: http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php Mark |
Casey, can you show us pictures of the rest of the gun? Fred.

Here's a few pictures, I'm by no means an expert at taking them.
Thanks,:) Casey |
the gun looks more spainish than French, but what do I know, they sure like to stamp marks on there guns.

Does the water table on the frame have any markings? If so, a picture of those would help. Fred.

It has the serial number, an oval with RG in the middle of it, and it has the Crown Symbol over PT indicating it was made for smokeless powder. I've been told that more information could be on the wood under the butt plate. However, the screws that hold it on are engraved and timed perfectly so I'm not removing them. I'm thinking it was made before WW2 and the RG could be the makers initials. The gun is very very tight, it functions perfectly and the quality rivals anything I have in the safe. So, It still remains a mystery.

Hi Casey, I looked up the marks in the Directory of Proof Marks by Wirnsberger but it seems to verify what you have already stated. Sorry could not be more of a help. Andy

Thanks Andy,
I had done quite a bit of research before I asked on this forum. Like Mr. Hamner stated earlier, the French guns are a little hard to research. I've seen a couple that look similar at a glance but when you get close up, there's always something a little different. We'll just have to keep looking. I appreciate the feedback. |
