Lucky Me

I had the fortunate experience, back in September, of touring and photographing the old "Glen Rock Kennels" (birthplace of Skeet) here in Andover, just prior to the place going on the market, and inside of the two kennel houses found a few old artifacts of days gone by. One of the items was a calendar top print of a Lynn Bogue Hunt painting tacked to the wall of the main room where the skeeters probably gathered to get out of the weather. I also found some of the original whelping boxes where the bitch would give birth to her litter and nurse them in dim privacy. I bought the print for a handsome sum but didn't think I would want the whelping boxes so I never made an offer. A couple of weeks later I got in touch with the owner to make an offer on the whelping boxes because I thought they would clean up nicely and make good end tables for my new sporting/gun room that I plan on starting this winter. I was told that she had an offer on the property and the prospective buyer stipulated that nothing was to be removed from the property, even the kennels. Curses, foiled again!
Last Sunday I noticed a FOR SALE sign in front of the property so I cantacted the owner again to make an offer on the boxes. I am now the proud owner of a sentimental piece of Skeet history. Three whelping boxes are now in my possession . . . Lucky Me!! |

Way to go, Dean.

Dean,Congratulations...You have been on the trail of these for a while now.Great to see your perseverance paid off...
|
Dean, if I may, what are the dimentions of the whelping box?
Thanks Ben |
Good for you, Dean. Why do you think it is a "whelping box" rather than a kennel box? If that's a whelping box, they lost a lot of pups in it without an interior rail.
|
Ben, they all measure 24" long, 18" wide, 11" deep without the lid and 21" from the floor to the top of the box again, minus the lid. The lid, by itself is 12" high.
Don, I don't know that it isn't a "kennel box" but it was referred to as a "whelping box" by the property owner who sold them to me. Dean |
A very nice addition to the gun room.
