10ga fixed
 

When over to Bachelders Friday and picked up my Grade 4 1873 Remington hammer lifter. He did a beautiful job restoring it. Also took along my 1882 Remington hammer gun and Parker lifter - both 10ga. Had them both taken out to 2 7/8" chambers. We got back to the club in time to try them - wanted to see if the Parker still kicked so bad. Was shooting 18.5grs of 700X, SP-10 wad, and 1 1/16 oz of shot. Finally, no excessive recoil with the Parker. Now I can shoot the same shells with any of my 10ga guns, and by starting with the 2 7/8 when the ends go bad I can trim them and keep on using them. The cost of those new 10ga shells are too high not to reuse them as much as possible.

Am I to understand you took out one of your lifter gun chambers to 2 7/8". My 10ga lifter is so light I would be afraid to lenthin the chambers. But I dont have your recoil problem.

My lifter is also a light gun, or what I consider light - a tad over 8 lbs. I don't shoot heavy loads but pretty light - 1 or 1 1/16oz loads. I only shoot clay birds anymore seeing how my legs went south with nerve damage. Parkers were 2 5/8 or 2 7/8 for the 10 - so now mine's the big one. Next up is a Parker hammerless 10ga that we're gonna try and take out to 8ga. It's a really heavy gun with plenty of steel in the barrels and Brad thinks it can be done soon as he gets the reamers to do it. It'll be a lot cheaper than buying a 8ga. Hope it works. Paul

Sounds like a neat project. We have some things in common. My hunting has been curtailed due to a drunk driver. Legs are poor at best. Still love to shoot. Maby one of these days I will make it to the woods. Squirls with an 8 ga. Cool

the 8 ga does a really good job on squirls...paul i hope this project works for you..they use to take the real big thick barrel spanisg 10 ga s and turn them into 8 ga...this is truly a interesting project please keep us informed... charlie

Not sure of the frame size - it's over at Brads.

The only reason I bought the Remington is because it was made to use a rifle barrel liner and was told they had it. Well, you know how that goes - no liner. I had to replace both hammers, a main spring, and there was no extractor. Got it shooting again and the back trigger broke. Oh well. Glad a friend who I do a lot of free smithing for had a " donner " 1882 Remington which I've been robbing. Now, if I could find the sights and liner for it I'd be a happy camper.

hope you find that liner and sights paul..reckon what caliber rifle she was..paul theres a place in alaska that makes rifle liners for shotguns..ive seen the listings before... hows the 8 ga project comeing im most interested in this project...you know bill has a 8 ga at 10 lbs thats from parker...sure would like to look at that one bet it would make a fine turkey gun...what gets me in the 8 ga is that not much choke was put in these guns..i only have one with some choke...but ive looked over a lot of the british made 8 ga s and they don t seem to put much store in choke size either most are 1/4 choke with a few seen at 2/3 choke... hope yours are full and full...charlie
