1895 GH

Thanks again for allowing this old man on the forum. Kind a slow with computers and managed to upload some pictures:banghead: of my GH project.
The serial number pulls up1895, 30 in barrels. It looks like some pretty wood under the oil stained stock and locks up tight on face. Barrels look good inside but were browned at some time and not etched. The right barrel about 12 in from the breech has some pitting that concerns me. I know this will need to be evaluated. My hopes are to refinish the wood and if the barrels check ok ,bring it into firing condition [low pressure]. Then at some time in the future barrels will go off to be restored. B. Dudley has already supplied me with some trigger plate screws to replace the buggered up ones. Peened the old ones and they came back better than expected. A little more work may bring them back as i want before indexing the new ones. If it doesn't come back to a shooter it will be prettier and my restoration skills will be better. All advise/comments are welcome

Will you recut the checkering? Engraving looks a bit thin but that could just be my eyes. Re-engrave?

I will try my hand at the checkering on the forend. The stock looks good not sharp but strong .will need to see after refinishing starts on the wood. Still a lot of oil coming out. The engraving will be a future job. Not me but someone with a steadier hand and better eyes.

If I may ask, what is the gauge of your project?

Raymond Dunkum 07-17-2022 11:03 PM

12 gauge with both barrels full choke. Chambers measure 2 3/4 in. They had to be lengthened at a latter date.

I think the original screws are worth peening. Will you mount them in a fixture to peen and file them? Great work so far.
