After hazmat and shipping $50+/lb. Ouch.

Aaron Beck 01-27-2023 11:44 AM

Locally, small gun stores just ad the cost of hazmat to EACH container of powder. I guess they feel justified as thats the "online cost" but when you see 1 lb for 47 or more..Thats ouch.
If the online venue will let you stock up, you definitely come out ahead but of course I would prefer to support the local guys.
Thanks for the heads up.

My last couple of grouse trips to New Hampshire I was able to stock up a bit but want to try the 20/28 so I swallowed hard and bought a couple pounds.

Arthur Shaffer 01-27-2023 12:34 PM

At 12:33 they show no stock of any of them.

Andrew Sacco 01-27-2023 01:27 PM

16lbs on the way

Craig Larter 01-27-2023 02:34 PM

I bought a 8 pounder of Clay Dot. I haven't seen any from a trusted source in a very long time.

Dan Steingraber 01-27-2023 02:54 PM

Thanks for the heads up Craig.

I really think you have to dollar cost average this stuff. Just keep buying because over time you'll make out fine. I think it was Warren Buffet who said "Don't time the market or your freedom" : )

If one waits for the prices to come down one will be sorely disappointed.

Milton C Starr 01-27-2023 04:35 PM

Their price on Bluedot is exactly the same as what I paid on Gunbroker back In December or so. Not sure if thats good or bad but I get about 150-170 loads out of 1lb.

Craig Larter 01-27-2023 05:48 PM

I can't believe powder prices will drop to pre-pandemic levels----ever. My biggest concern is keeping my vintage guns fed with low pressure/recoil ammo.

Heard a news report yesterday that the US has supplied a huge number of 155mm artillery shells to the Ukraine gov't and that the Pentagon is moving to replentish US inventory by increasing production six fold to a level not seen since the Korean War. No doubt the propellent is nitrocellulose based and guess what that will do to availability of smokeless powders for civilian use? Only so much NC is being manufactured and I doubt any of the makers will be investing in new powder mills as compared with the current practice of using "surplus production" from the gov't arsenals they manage under contract to Uncle Sam.

IMHO folks that think prices will get back to pre crud prices are delusional at best .

Aaron Beck 01-31-2023 12:52 PM

Universal is the go to powder for low pressure howitzer shells.

Andrew Sacco 01-31-2023 01:20 PM

My go to 12g "practice" load is 2 3/4" Nitro/GC/STS, American Select 18g with WAA12L wad, 7/8oz shot and Winchester primer. The Alliant site lists it at 1200fps and 5800 PSI. Shoots great out of my Vulcan barrels even if they're 2 5/8" chambers. American Select has been a bit more readily available, readily being the operative word and interpreted however you choose to.

Howitzer shells and now tank rounds for Ukraine.

Chuck Bishop 02-02-2023 03:57 PM

Next week, I'm officially out of reloading. Tired of scrounging around for empty hulls and components. Reloaded over 1K each of 12, 20, and 28ga shells. When I run out, I'm shooting new ones.

Natchez sold out in less than 4 hours after they opened. A friend got an 8# and I got the last 6 1 pounders.

edgarspencer 02-03-2023 09:17 AM

For those whose missed out on Natchez 20/28, Brownells emailed me during the night, that they too have 20/28 now in stock. One pounders only. I suspect this will sell out quickly too.

Daryl Corona 02-03-2023 09:39 AM

Received my 8lb of Extra-Lite and 2- 8lbs of 20/28 yesterday so I'm good to go for a few months.

allen newell 04-10-2023 01:14 PM

Brownells has plenty of 20/28 powder now. Not cheap
