If you hunt turkeys with a 20 the key is how the gun patterns. You don’t have to shoot magnum shells to kill a turkey. A nice tight choked Parker 20 with a 2.5” or 2.75” shell is ample.

I agree completely Reggie! Head shots with dense patterns of #6 lead is all I ever needed.
TSS may be good for those 70-90 yard shots but I can shoot a deer at 300 yards with my .270 and call it “hunting.” Oops, I’ll bet I just offended some folks… . |
The thing about TSS is that its shooting such dense patterns since you shoot smaller shot.A 20ga with #9 shot is deadly at 40 or even 50yds.It also is much more forgiving intuit if you hit low those same #9's will penetrate better than #6 lead.I don't think anyone needs to shoot turkeys at 60 plus yards.Lead will every now and then throw a curve ball and a bird walks or flies away. Not so much with TSS.Still all boils down to the operator.

20 is enough gun. Between both my youth grandsons They have killed 6 toms with my parker , ithaca and fox 20's and i shot one with my fox 20 too. We shoot 1 oz. 6's at 1150 fps. But the longest shot was 35 yds most in side of 25 yds. Bring my grandson soon for the youth hunt in a few weeks. Good luck hunting

One ounce of hand-loaded TSS number 9s in a 20 gauge turns any 2 3/4" gun into a 40 yard gun. The pattern and penetration is incredible. The double wadding and small shot inside it protects the bore.

I have killed many with 2.5 and 2.75 shells in 5's with 20's, 16's and 12's. I used 5's in a 2 7/8 10 gauge years ago too. Lead is great

I m sorry fellows but I will stick with my 8 ga and 10 ga and magnum 12 s no pun intended.....if I had a good long barrel 3 inch 20 ga I would try that new 3 inch 1 3/4 ounces of tss on turkeys......charlie

Coincidently, I read today that Iowa will phase in the use of the .410 for turkey hunting next year. I don't know the details, but I can imagine some of the restrictions.

NH has prohibited any gauge smaller than a 20 but this year has changed to allow 28 and .410 with TSS type shot. It would be pretty cool to carry a .410 weight wise.

This TSS shot thing has me wondering. I looked at a 12ga. 2 3/4" load the other day and it claimed 1140 fps. No info on pressure. Would love to shoot it in my GH 32" Vulcan steel gun but scared to death of what the pressures might be.

the tss shot is a turkeys night mare.it pattern much better than lead in a right choked barrel but not too tight....those no 9 s are my choice for turkeys....I hope I don't have to give up my big guns for a 410 turkey gun...charlie

Here is the results of the NH youth weekend opener. My grandson Riley's 2nd year turkey hunt was a good one. The birds were not shot with a parker ,he used a 20 ga Charles Daly O/U choked F/M with 1 oz of 6's. 1st bird a 14 lb jake at 8 yds and 2nd bird 2 hrs later was a 22 lb with 8.5 beard and 1 inch spurs shot at 35 yds. I love turkey hunting !!:)

It’s wonderful to see the kids doing it!

I have been using #8 TSS 7/8oz and 1oz loads in my 12ga Parkers with damascus barrels for the past two years. With 2 3/4" shells using 16-16.4 grains of Red dot, a Remington STS primer, the pressure is 6100 PSI. The DH with D4, 30 in barrels weighs 8.4 pounds. I use a cut down wad for steel shot with a mylar sleeve and buffer in with the shot; there is virtually no recoil with this load at 1200 fps. #8 TSS is equal to #3 lead due to its density, no shot deformation and with much less frictional drag the patterns are exceptional. Further, when you hit a turkey with these loads the are dead. All the shot goes completely through the bird; they never kick or flap when you pick them up; stone dead. And, virtually no damage to the barrels. Devastating turkey and goose load.

Are there any low pressure TSS factory 12 or 20ga 2 3/4" loads available out there ?
