New to me EH

I recently acquired an EH 10ga. 30" and finally got out this afternoon to shoot it. Been raining and 45 degrees for several days here on the Gulf Coast and the sun finally peeked out and we saw 60 today. An unfired shotgun is always a motivator! Stopped and picked up a case of clays and headed to the club. After spending the weekend 2 weeks ago with an 0 frame 16 chasing quail this felt like swinging a telephone pole! BUT, I didn't buy it to hunt quail. I'm looking forward to those high flying White Wings of September.

Nice ! I’m kinda partial to EH’s myself .

The Short Ten hits harder and shoots further than one would think it would.

Nice wood the the early Grade 2's. 10's are big fun congratulations!

scott kittredge 02-28-2022 01:18 PM

A very early hammerless 10 ga. ,is it on a 2 frame ? i think it would be one of the 1st runs of hammerless 10 's made. i think the early hammerless guns were 12's on 2 frames so they made a lot of early 10's on the same frame to get some out there to the customers ???

It is on a #2 frame. I was pleasantly surprised on the wood, better than the pics I saw. I think this is a "first year" hammerless from what I have found.

One of my EH guns is a circa 1889 2 frame 30” that has rather nicely figured wood as well .

nice gun should be murder on those white wings this fall....charlie

That gun could smoke a turkey this spring season.

Keith Doty 04-04-2022 03:03 PM

I've never killed a turkey with a shotgun. My idea of spring turkey hunting is driving a South Texas property with a bull barrel varmint rifle and a cold cerveza. I actually rarely shoot one, prefer to just watch. A Pecos variety wild turkey isn't much on the eating side (small and tough as an old boot, breast only part really edible) but a beautiful creature and it's fascinating to watch the spring ritual.

A 2 frame! Wow. That would make a fantastic waterfowler. Look forward to the stories this coming fall. I've been with Bruce Day when he used his light 10 on quail!

Now a 2 frame on quail ! That’s kinda Intresting , just so happens I have a factory original EH 2 frame 28” gun that’s choked cylinder and lite mod . If I’m not mistaken it’s the bottom gun in my avatar .

Richard Flanders 07-23-2022 11:25 PM

He and Charlie H and I were actually hunting pheasants in Kansas but a quail got up and Bruce took it with his 10 with a long crossing shot. I think it's a 2-frame.

Keith Doty 07-24-2022 12:52 PM

They'd stone you to death for showing up on a South Texas quail hunt with a 10 ga.! I usually shoot an O frame 26" 16 ga. lite mod/IC or one of several pretty open choke 20s I have. Most of my group shoots 28s and razz me when I show up with a 16. Besides, to hunt quail with a 10 I'd want a gun bearer. Even this 2 frame is more than I want to carry in the brush.

charlie cleveland 07-24-2022 02:24 PM

once in time the 10 ga was the favorite of all shotguns...it was used as a quail gun....my dad almost got to buy a lc smith 10 ga hammerless with 26 inch impr. cly both barrels it was used as a quail gun....charlie

Don't think that is true, Charlie. One of the many shotgun related "olde wive's tales." Research presented at one of the long ago PGCA annual meetings showed the 10-gauge never outsold the 12-gauge and by the late 1890s the 10-gauge market share had become miniscule.

Keith Doty 07-24-2022 04:12 PM

That's certainly what the used gun market reflects. Seems like any time period I'm interested in buying you have to look harder for 10s while tripping over 12s. Many more 12s than small bores as well. I've personally seen 1 .410 hammer SxS, 0 28s, 0 20s, 2 16s and a boatload of 12s, a few 10s, an 8 and a 4. Granted I'm probably underexposed, just need to spend more time and $$ on my habit!.......My wife would disagree........at length.

The weight of the gun doesn't bother me as much as the weight of a box of the shells the EH 28" balances well , I'd have no issue using it from one of the quail deals you build . I've also got a Grade 0 top lever 10 2 barrel set on I believe a 2 frame , one of the barrels left the factory at 26" that one does very well on the skeet field so I'd not have an issue using it for a quail hunt as long as I was hunting from some sort of transportation .

Oh they're out there one just needs to be persistant . Lord knows I've found/acquired way more than I need of 10's and 16's :rotf:

Keith Doty 07-24-2022 07:27 PM

I still haven't figured out how many is "enough". I'm still chasing an 0 frame 26" 16 Damascus among others.

When they appear they quickly disappear. A clean 28” antique Damascus 16 on a #1 frame.

Bill Murphy 07-25-2022 03:35 PM

My Prussian Daly 10 is a 26" bird gun that weighs 6 pounds, 4 ounces, Krupp steel barrels. I describe it as "My favorite grouse gun" although I have never shot a grouse with it.

That is SO true! That's a nice one Bruce! I'm holding out for an 0 frame. I've got a 26" VH that weighs 5#13oz, handles like a lightning bolt. Really want a similar gun in Damascus. Lighter is better.
