Found on Facebook, I thought this awesome and dramatic painting was worthy of sharing.

Thanks for posting, Greg. I see the copyright, but cannot detect a signature. Do you know the artist's name?

Greg Baehman 03-05-2023 08:44 PM

The artist that created this incredible image is Miguel Angel Moraleda Santacruz and his painting is entitled 'Setters et Becasses'.

While not a Setter guy I do love setters and it was the first breed I ever hunted over as a young man. What I like about the image is the young setter in the background holding point (backing) but following the flight of the bird with eyes...while the rock solid cagy veteran setter in the foreground hasn't taken his eyes or nose off the second bird still on the ground...wonderful picture. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like European woodcock judging by the long pointed wings. Do North American hunters use such huge bells on their dogs?... I sure don't.

Beautiful painting though with beautiful stylish setters!!

My bird dog bell collection does not include anything like the ones in the picture. What a great painting.

RE: the woodcock. Whether Eurasian or American we have to realize this is an artist's rendition and not a photograph. Initially I thought they were American woodcock, but Eurasian might make more sense as the they were painted by a contemporary Spanish artist.

RE: the bells. I agree they are larger than I use and in his description of the painting the artist wrote the following: "My thanks to Mr. Labassa Laurent and Mr. Sébastien Fachin for allowing me to represent their magnificent Setter specimens, and also recognition to Mr. Denis Pascal for his great savoir putting 'music' to this modality with his handmade bells."

Bells of that size would be quite deafening unless you dog hunted at a plodding pace

Large bells also beat the hell out of the forelegs of my setters, I like smaller lighter ones, and just hit the locator beeper when I need to---but yes , love the painting, and hadnt noticed the other woodcock until pointed out

wow...this sure is possible that this is the best hunting scene of wood cock I ve ever seen....charlie
