I am leaving Wednesday from Texas to drive to Wyoming to pick up one of my bird dogs from the trainer. We are going to spend a couple days looking for a sage grouse or two.
We are strictly DIY at this point and have found some public ground that looks promising. Any recommendations on shot size and choke? I was planning on bringing 12 gauge Trojan 30" M/F with #4 RST and 16 gauge Trojan 26" IC/M with RST 1 oz copper #6. |
I'm taking three guns:
Parker 12 gauge GH, 30 in. Fox Sterlingworth 12 gauge, 30 in. Fox Sterlingworth 16 Gauge 28 in. taking RSTs in 5, 6, 7 for all three guns. |

Have a wonderful time. Sage grouse are special birds.
I’ll be north of you. |
We enjoyed hunting Sage Grouse for a few years but in Oregon you have to draw a permit and then are allowed only two birds for the season. After a rattlesnake came into our camp and bit one of my Britt's while she was tied I decided that it wasn't worth driving four hours from home and spending $1200 in vet bills to kill two birds. Speaking of dogs, we found the Sage Grouse, where we hunted, to be very dog shy as they flushed a long range when we had the dogs out. We could get much closer if we left the dogs in the camper. Perhaps they thought they were coyotes.

MeToo.
Another sage grouse. This one on point and hold by my 14 month old setter. I rotate the pointer and setter on the ground. |
