Geese

A predicted stiff northerly wind got me thinking of Kingsville. Only my friend and I in the pit, the way I prefer.

The sun is just getting up good and a flock of six appears on the northern horizon. The calls come out, pleading and coercing, offering false delights. Their wings tip, drifting behind us to square up with the breeze, a few tense heartbeats and they're in right over the blocks. Three on each side, just perfect. Easy now, don't miss. My first shot and two drop! Then I pick up the 3rd with a quick left barrel. All three graveyard dead, there's a reason I shoot that big gun.

Nothing flying out, I turn to my friend with an inquiring look. A smile, holding up three fingers. He's accounted for everything on his side as well, making good use of his automatic. One cripple to shoot over and the limit is done.

The essence of fall.

The swamp angel? Nice shooting. We are limited to only 1 bird this year.

Gun? Loads?

Destry L. Hoffard 10-06-2022 12:27 AM

This is The Preacher, a factory magnum 10 gauge. I usually shoot Federal Tungsten Polymer loads out of the old gun. I stocked up heavy when Federal was phasing them out several years ago.

Thanks, Destry. Looks like The Preacher had a few converts ........

Prerequisite for geese is 10 gauge unless your a fellow in Maryland with a superb little VHE 28 gauge 30” . All the geese I’ve ever fired at were done in with handloaded bismuth in a 10 gauge .
