A three inch 28??
Has anybody ever heard of a three inch 28? I have heard of a DHE 28 so marked on the barrel lug. The gun is skeet configured and has 26 inch bbls so the chamber length of three inches is a mystery.

That's neat Rich ,I have never seen a 3", 28 Gauge Shell !
|
I understand that Fiocchi listed them at one time
but -to me it would not be a who question but a WHY???? |
I have no idea of why anyone would want a 3 inch 28. But as this is a late Rem era DHE was anyone makeing a 3'' 28? If memory serves (here we go again:rolleyes:) I read somewhere that this guage was at one time mfg in 2.5, 2 9/16, 2 3/4, 3 inch and even 4 inch for a Paradox gun mfg by H&H. It was standardized at the current 2 3/4 inch length but I can't find anything to back up my alleged memory. Either way this PArker is marked as being chambered for the 3 inch 28.

they made a lot of 28 ga in the 2 7/8 inch lenth in all brands of ammo..shells of this lenth are fairly common on the shell sites... charlie

Yes! It did not mean a larger powder or shot payload. It had to do with quantity and type of wads. As an example, I have a WRA Co. 20 gauge shell, 3", rolled crimp with a 2-1/2 dram load of Hercules EC, and 7/8 ounce of chilled 7 shot.

I too would like to see a picture of the 28 ga. DHE barrels with a marking indicating a 3" chamber.
I know that just about all DH barrel flats were stamped with a 3 but a factory stamp of "3 inch" or "3" " is something I would like to see. |

3" 28ga dhe

Here is the dhe 28ga 3" chamber that Rich is speaking of. All of the Late remington 28ga parkers I have owned have been 2 7/8 " chambers and marked that way on these late guns. I have never seen another 3" gun.

Chuck- thanks
That is so cool. |
I have a 3" 28 ga. shell in my collection (I believe it is a Remington).

You will be able to find more information on 28 ga. ammunition on the I.A.A. forum .
Shot shells are not my main interest . International Ammunition Association forum: http://iaaforum.org/forum3/viewforum.php?f=8 Glenn |
That is obviously a Remington marking, rare as rare can be.

Very interesting Remington Parker marking.
I don't know of any North American ammunition manufacturer offering anything but 2 1/2 inch and 2 7/8 inch 28-gauge paper shells. Just before WW-II the 28-gauge skeet loads began being put up in 2 3/4 inch cases which became the "standard" for 28-gauge shells not long after WW-II. The old roll-crimped 2 7/8 inch paper 28-gauge shells look really long and I've known of folks thinking they were 3-inch. Here is a smattering of pre-WW-II 28-gauge roll crimped shells and a roll-crimped 20-gauge 3-inch Magnum Peters High Velocity for comparison. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps3304f062.jpg From left -- Shurshot 2 1/2 inch shell, loaded length 2.357" -- Nitro Club 2 7/8 inch shells, loaded length 2.724" -- Remington Express 2 7/8 inch shell, loaded length 2.686" -- Western Super-X 2 3/4 inch shell, loaded length 2.586". The Express has a deeper crimp than the Nitro Clubs. Same first four shells with a 2 3/4 inch Shurshot roll crimped shell added at left end -- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps80bb2c36.jpg Loaded length 2.562". And finally, here is the 2 3/4 inch roll-crimped Western Super-X from the first picture with a loaded length of 2.586" with a 2 7/8 inch Super-X roll-crimped shell with a loaded length of 2.680". http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps295bf73b.jpg The 12-, 16- and 20-gauge paper shells were offered in a greater variety of lengths. |
several boxes of 28 ga shotgun shells in the 2 7/8 length on gunbroker auction site if anybody is interested.... charlie
